The building of the Monroe Street project marked the beginning of a hydropower legacy for The Avista Corporation.
Completed in 1890, Monroe Street was Avista's first hydro project. It helped the town of Spokane Falls move from candles and oil lamps to incandescent lighting.
Monroe Street underwent a face lift in preparation for 1974 World's Fair Exposition held in Spokane. A major redevelopment of the project in 1990 replaced five turn-of-the-century generators with one generator able to produce twice the energy using the same amount of water flow.
The Monroe Street project, within Avista's Huntington Park in the downtown core next to City Hall, offers a scenic view and urban wildlife habitat.
Monroe Street has been producing energy longer than any other hydroelectric project active in Washington State.
As the senior hydroelectric project of the Avista system, Monroe Street continues the company's hydropower legacy into a second century of service.
