Noxon Rapids, located on the Clark Fork River in northwestern Montana, is Avista's largest generating hydro project. Built in 1959, the energy from the project nearly doubled again Avista's overall system electric generating capacity.
Located 20 miles upstream of the Cabinet Gorge project, Noxon Rapids is the youngest hydro facility on Avista's system.
Noxon Rapids is part of the overall coordinated hydroelectric system of the Clark Fork River which is controlled by the federally-operated Hungry Horse project.
Avista, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, developed and helped improve many recreation sites in the area. Through these partnerships with state and federal agencies, the fish, wildlife and recreational benefits associated with the project reservoir continue to serve the region.
