More About Haiku
HAIKU IS A FORM OF JAPANESE POETRY.
The FWEE contest uses the 17 syllable verse form. It is written in three lines to equate to the three metrical phrases of haiku in Japanese. The first line has 5 syllables, the second 7 syllables and the third 5 syllables.
For example:
Currents flow downstream (1st line, 5 syllables)
Falling water spins turbines (2nd line, 7 syllables)
Light finds my darkness (3rd line, 5 syllables)
The shortness of the poem captures a snapshot, understanding and perspective of the world in a single moment. It gives the sense of discovery, where the essential nature and meaning of something comes clear.
Haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the nineteenth century.
